Using a strange camera exploit to learn about the physics of music.

If you have an iPhone 4 or a similar phone with a similar camera, you may have noticed some strange things while recording fast-moving objects. There’s a video of a propeller taken with a nokia camera that shows a similar effect. Well someone decided to use this stroboscopic effect in a more creative way. He sticks his phone in his acoustic guitar to show how the different strings move while he plays a song.

Now it’s not the most perfect performance, but that actually lets us see more. It’s obvious that the lower strings vibrate slower, but it’s very interesting to see how the strings react when he doesn’t hit them quite the way he wanted to. If you were to show someone a video like this before they were to ever pick up a guitar, they might go in to it with a much better understanding of what to expect.
