I had no idea the abacus was still being taught, but apparently in parts of Japan it still is. This is a great idea. There’s no better way to see math happening right in front of your eyes than using an abacus. Being hands on with such a piece of equipment would instill the fundamentals of math much better than just repeating problems without one. It’s like getting a look inside the brain of a calculator. I’m not saying all of the Japanese teaching methods are the best, but I am very impressed by their use of the abacus.
